New Books on Intellectuals and Democracy

Since mid April, Public Virtue has publicly launched a call for contributions to celebrate A.E. Priyono’s life and thinking shortly after his passing in April 12. This has resulted in an impressive roll-call of over 50 senior human rights and democracy practitioners and scholars.

Digital technology coupled with restrictions on a day to day activities due to SARS-CoV-2 led to a rare opportunity for senior and younger activist-intellectuals to jointly reflect on the need to promote critical discourse around democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression.

Whilst ostensibly serving as a tribute to the life and thinking of one of Public Virtue’s founders, the publications provide renewed momentum for strategic and coordinated collaboration on critical issues around the shrinking of the civic space, the limitation of freedom of expression and the need to develop a critical discourse on democracy and freedoms.
